Broccoli Paruppusli - Broccoli Stir fried with Steamed Lentils - Broccoli Paruppu Usli

When we think of Broccoli, you think of recipes which are Western like Roasted Broccoli, Broccoli Cheddar Soup or Chinese/Thai recipes. These days Broccoli is quite popular in India and are available in Supermarkets. Then we have to give some Indian recipes a try, shouldn't we? My friend Nachal gave me this idea years ago and I have made this quite often. Hope you try this unusual combo and enjoy it as much as we do.

Ingredients

Broccoli - 2 small heads
Oil and Salt to taste

For the pulse ball
Toor Dal 1 cup (will make around 12 small balls)
Red Chillies 2
Salt

Method of Preparation

1. Soak the toor dal for a couple of hours.

2. Grind into a coarse paste with chillies and salt adding little water.

3. Roll into small balls. 1 cup will make around 10-12 balls.

4. Steam the balls in an idli plate or steamer for 10-12 minutes.

5. Crumble the pulse balls and keep aside.

6. Separate the broccoli florets and make little pieces. Try and pull them to make them small rather than cut it.

7. Heat oil in a pan and add the broccoli. Cook till it is well done. Splash a tbsp or so of water if needed.

8. Add the crumbled dal to this and some salt. Mix well.

Enjoy as a side dish for rice with Sambar/Rasam. It even makes a great side dish for Roti.
