Pongal Recipes

Pongalooooo Pongal

Pongal is the harvest festival in Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month 'Thai' (Jan-Feb). It is a 4 day festival Bhogi, Pongal , Maattu Pongal and Kannu Pongal.

Pongal is marked with the cooking of Pongal in earthen pots in brick hearths placed on Kolam (Rangoli). Kolams are put all over the front yard of the house. Sugar canes is another thing I remember from my childhood Pongal celebrations.

Now off to some Pongal Recipes

1. Chakkara Pongal -

Chakkara means Sweet. Chakkara Pongal is a sweet pongal made with Jaggery and Milk. The word Pongal means 'cooking over'. The rice cooks in an earthen pot typically placed in a brick hearth outside the house on a beautifully decorated Rangoli called Kolam.

Once you make chakkara pongal this way, you will never make it any other way. This is a traditional way of making Pongal without using Pressure cooker. I promise you, it will blow your mind away.

2. Venn Pongal

How can Pongal be complete without its perfect partner - Venn Pongal. Venn means White. It is a made with rice and moong dal spiced with pepper and cumin. Best accompaniment for Venn Pongal is Gothsu. Other combinations are coconut chutney and sambar.

Other Variations for the standard Pongal

3. Oats Pongal

4. Rava Pongal
