Thiruvathira Kali

Thiruvathira is a festival celebrated in Margazhi/Dhanu (Dec-Jan) month in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This year the festival was on Jan 08 2012. Different people celebrate in different ways. We just make Thiruvathira Kali and Ezhukari (Thalakam) and pray Lord Shiva. Some people do fasting on this day for the well being of their husband and make a feast consumed after sunset. We participated in a puja like that at a friends place. She made an amazing feast for us. We do a similar fasting and prayer during Karadayan Nombu which is celebrated by us in the Panguni (Mar-Apr) month.

I have followed the recipe for Kali as made by my Mother in Law. It has a nice grainy texture to it. As I always say, anything made of Jaggery is just heavenly for me.

Do check out the recipe for Ezhukari (thalakam) as well here

Ingredients

Raw Rice 1 cup
Jaggery 1 cup
Cashews few
Raisins few
Cardamom powdered a little
Ghee 2 tbsp

Method of Preparation

1. Wash the rice and let it dry. Either put in a muslin cloth or just leave in a broad vessel overnight.

2. Roast the rice till it is reddish in colour.

3. Powder into a rava consistency.

4. In the same pan, add a little ghee and fry the cashews and raisins and keep them aside.

5. In the pan, heat 2.5 cups of water along with the jaggery.

6. When it comes to a boil, add the cardamom powder and the rice rava stirring continuously.

7. Simmer and keep stirring till all the water is absorbed and the rice rava is cooked well. The kali will bubble and splatter, so take care while stirring.

8. Set the gas in low and keep it for a few more minutes.

9. Stir in a little more ghee and the cashews and raisins.
